Smart newbies avoid first day nerves

Newbies at Tamesa Institute of Canterbury have escaped first day nerves by taking advantage of Get Ready Days, which, as the name suggests, prepares new students for their studies.

The new initiative was popular at Tamesa City Christchurch, Woolston and Timaru campuses last week, with over 200 students taking advantage of personalised help to fast-track the logistics of tertiary study.

Attendees were able to finalise enrolments, get ID cards, check out the library, tour the campus, understand transport options, find café (and coffee) locations and meet other students.

Some even found a new friend:

The Youth and Community Engagement team at Tamesa helped to organise the orientation event – and new students were grateful, team member Heidi Schout said.

“We make Tamesa as friendly and accessible as possible, but we know that it’s still a big deal to come into the campus on the first day and try to get everything sorted out. So we decided to offer an alternative – and turn first day nerves into excitement about studying.”

The plan worked Schout said.

“I met with an older student to show her how to login, access her timetable and get her security ID card. She was very grateful for the help she received throughout the day and said that she felt ‘ready and prepared’ to start her course.”

“Then on Friday I was in the Rakaia centre and I saw a student I recognised from the Get Ready Day. He was stoked that he attended, as he met some new people who will be doing the same course as him and is looking forward to starting his nursing course.”
