The Certificate in Foundation Studies will enable you to meet the academic and English Language entry requirements for most of the diplomas and degrees.

As a foundation studies student you will develop your English Language and mathematics skills as well as gain an introduction to subjects in your chosen academic field.

Credit recognition

Credit recognition is available for this programme; if you have related skills, knowledge and/or experience, it may count towards part or even all of the qualification.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements
  • The Certificate in Foundation Studies has open entry. However, some specific pathways within the programme have different entry requirements (see below).

    If you are a domestic student you will be asked to do a short reading, writing and mathematics task to assess your level of learning.

  • Health and Science Pathway: Academic entry requirements for the Health and Science Pathway are 42 NCEA credits at Level 3 including 14 credits in biology or human biology, 14 credits in physics, statistics, mathematics, or chemistry, 14 credits across any subject areas or domains. Applicants must have a minimum of 14 credits in mathematics at Level 2, and 14 credits in chemistry at Level 2.

English requirements
  • If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, us for an assessment.

    • IELTS 5.0 Academic (with no lower than 5.0 in each of the subtests).
    • Health and Science Pathway: English requirements for the Health and Science Pathway are 6.5 Academic (with no lower than 7.0 in listening and speaking subtests and no lower than 6.5 in reading and writing subtests).
    • For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
      Note: If you have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements you are not required to provide evidence of English Language Skills.
