To introduce students to the principles of digestion and metabolism of food by the human body. To introduce the organisation and function of foods for human nutrition. To apply the principles of Nutrition to specific populations and their activity needs.

Learning outcomes

Describe foods and their composition including nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Explain these structures, functions and synthesis within human nutrition.

Describe the human digestive process.

Outline healthy eating principles and apply these principles when assisting clients with dietary changes in a personal training setting.

Identify the role of major nutrients, including fluids, in relation to a range of physical activities, before, during and in recovery.

Describe analytical processes to determine nutrient intake and energy expenditure.

Outline contemporary nutrition-related issues in the sports fitness industry.
