To enable Registered Nurses to further develop their knowledge in the assessment and management of nausea and vomiting experienced by the dying person.

Learning outcomes

apply knowledge of the physiology of nausea and vomiting relevant to the palliative setting.

utilise advanced knowledge and skill in assessment of nausea and vomiting.

evaluate and critique pharmacological approaches to the management of nausea/vomiting during the dying phase.

apply knowledge of current non-pharmacological interventions in the management of nausea/vomiting during the care of the dying phase.

reflect on the psycho-social approaches to supporting the person experiencing nausea/vomiting, and their family/whānau, during the dying phase.

apply the principles of care of the dying person in relation to providing a 'best practice' approach to managing nausea/vomiting.

Critically evaluate literature, research and/or evidence concerning best practice in care co-ordination related to the management of nausea/vomiting.
