To enable Registered Nurses to further develop their knowledge in assessment and management of the patient with acute pain.

Learning outcomes

  • apply knowledge of the physiology of acute pain and responses to surgical intervention.
  • analyse the practice issues surrounding the assessment of pain and the factors that influence pain perception.
  • evaluate current pharmacological approaches to the management of postoperative pain.
  • apply knowledge of the use of specific modalities of postoperative pain management: patient controlled analgesia, epidural analgesia, systemic and oral analgesia.
  • critically evaluate literature, research and/or evidence concerning best practice in acute and postoperative pain management.
