To enable Registered Nurses to further develop their knowledge in the assessment and management of pain experienced by individuals in their last week of life.

Learning outcomes

  • Outline the physiology of the types of pain (e.g., somatic, visceral, bone, neuropathic) experienced in the palliative setting.
  • apply advanced knowledge and skill in the holistic assessment of pain.
  • apply current pharmacological approaches to the management of pain during the care of the dying phase.
  • apply current non-pharmacological interventions in the management of pain during the care of the dying phase.
  • Reflect on and explore the psycho-social approaches to supporting the person in pain, and their family/whanau, during the end of life phase.
  • apply principles of end of life care in relation to managing pain during the care of the dying phase.
  • Critically evaluate literature, research and/or evidence concerning best practice in pain management at the end of life.
