NASDA students sing Disney with symphony

A quest to create performance opportunities for music theatre-related works has led CPIT National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA)’s Richard Marrett to combine the music of Disney, the talent of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the vocal might of NASDA students for a very special concert.

The Around the World with Disney concert on Saturday 28 July at CBS Canterbury Arena features a chorus of at least 60 NASDA students who have been rehearsing numbers from Disney favourites such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules and The Little Mermaid for several months.

The concert is a wonderful opportunity for students according to Marrett. “For some, it will be their first experience of working with professional musicians and vocalists in such a big setting, and it provides a perfect vehicle for the acquisition of sight-singing, choral ensemble and performance skills.”

The concert is a result of a close working relationship between NASDA and the CSO. “My field of research and performance is centred on finding a New Zealand context for a range of music theatre-related works, and I have been working with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra for a number of years in this area. Due to the current lack of venues, they are committed to performances in the somewhat over-sized CBS Arena and I decided to find a vehicle that would have considerable appeal and attract a large audience.”

The concert, which also features soloist singers, will appeal to all age ranges and has the full support of the staff at Disney, in California. The programme features a variety of Disney music, instrumental and vocal, and scenes from popular animated movies, which will be projected behind the orchestra.
