Departing Hana O’Regan gives thanks at CPIT’s Eke Panuku

CPIT has given her a gift that she's giving back to her people, says the institute's Kaiarahi and Student Services Director Hana O'Regan.

O'Regan, who has been with the institute since 1997, will be starting a new job as general manager – oranga for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu tribal organisation next year.

She spoke at one of her last official CPIT engagements, the Eke Panuku awards for Māori and Pasifika student achievement, which was held at CPIT's Te Puna Wānaka on Thursday (December 10).

"This place has been my heart and helped me realise my potential. It's given me a gift of giving back and I'm doing that, to my people, Ngāi Tahu."

Celebrating her peoples' success: Hana O'Regan officiating at one her last engagements at CPIT, the second annual Eke Panuku awards for Maori and Pasifika student achievement.

She paid tribute to the CPIT staff who had made Eke Panuku happen for the second year, which had brought Māori and Pasifika cultures under the one roof for the achievement awards. These awards recognise community service outside CPIT, along with academic achievement within the institute.

"We were inundated by nominations, which means meaningful relationships are developing between students and teachers. Hearing and celebrating your success in every area of this institute, it means something; not just that you came to class but how you have supported your families and community."

She also paid tribute to the late Dr Monte Ohia, CPIT's former Kaiarahi in whose name the event's most prestigious awards were given.

"I knew a man, and he had a dream, and it was an easy one to buy into. He believed in the potential of our people. He felt every Māori and Pasifika success as his own."
