With the Christchurch rebuild kicking into gear, builder Darrin Sherriff knew he would have plenty of work as a site supervisor but he saw an opportunity to develop new work relevant skills.

Darrin had always wanted to study but lacked the confidence. He was biking past Campus Connect in Bishopdale one day and decided to go in and take a look. He was so impressed with the staff and the flexible study options that he enrolled to start the next day.

“It was a bit daunting going back into study but everyone has been really helpful and I’ve learnt heaps. I don’t know why I didn’t do this 20 years ago!”

Darrin has completed a National Certificate in Computing Level 2 and is now finishing level 3 through CPIT’s Computing for Free programme, based at Campus Connect. The self-paced free course is an ideal foundation for people who want to get back into study and up-skill with a formal qualification.

“You can flow through at your own pace and there’s no pressure on you. You want to get it done. Once I got in the door, I just kept on going with my study.”

Campus Connect has not only given Darrin computer skills but it has given him the confidence to pursue more study. He’s now planning to move into a project management or architectural draughtsman course.

“Campus Connect has given me the confidence to do more study at CPIT. I tell people that study is not as hard as you think it is once you get started. I’m so glad I’ve done it.”
