CPIT student makes NZ Sevens team

Three months ago CPIT student Sam Dickson was playing country rugby for West Melton and studying towards his Bachelor of Sustainability and Outdoor Education. Now he is travelling the world as a member of the New Zealand Rugby Sevens Team.

“I’m pretty stoked. This is the biggest achievement of my life so far,” he says.

After being spotted by scouts at a Country team game Sam was invited to come along to Canterbury team trainings and played several pre-season ITM games. The young talent impressed and coaches pointed him out to legendary sevens coach Gordon Tietjens.

After making it through two notoriously hard training camps, Sam was selected for the top 12 squad. He’s now working hard with the aim of making it to the next Olympics.

“Even the legends have to work hard to be up at this level… It’s about fitness, speed and the kick offs are key,” Sam says

He’s just returned from the first round of the IRB Sevens on the Gold Coast and is now in full-time training for the next round in Dubai in six weeks.

Alongside the huge commitment to his sport, Sam is determined to finish his CPIT degree with the aim of becoming a secondary school teacher.

“I know it’s important to have a post-rugby career,” he says.
