CPIT chefs wow international industry leader
CPIT chefs impressed world renowned Malaysian chef Datuk Chef Wan during filming for an episode of his TV Series which explores New Zealand’s top chefs and iconic foods.
Wan’s visit to Christchurch last week as part of his South Island tour was extremely exciting for the recovering hospitality industry in the city. “Events like this go a long way in supporting the rebuilding of Christchurch hospitality which is so dear to our hearts,” said Paul Robinson, CPIT Professional Cookery Tutor.
For the finale of Chef Wan’s Malaysian TV Series, Robinson and several CPIT graduates, as well as a current student, were invited to take part in a dinner hosted by graduate Laura Jane Bara. The idea was to share food with each other in a home-style setting.
Guests had the rare opportunity to sample traditional dishes prepared by Chef Wan himself. Bara then prepared Halal chicken for the Muslim guests followed by Robinson who prepared Paua, something which Chef Wan had not tried before. The dishes were very well received by the celebrity chef who even asked for the recipes.
“The Paua dish was amazing. I was very surprised by the meaty texture and taste,” Chef Wan said.
The night was a resounding success and will feature on Malaysian television later in the year.
While in Christchurch, Chef Wan also filmed with celebrated New Zealand chef Jonny Schwass at the Gorilla Bar & Restaurant.
