Chefs converge on Visions for special Olympic Feast Christchurch dinner

Olympians of New Zealand's restaurant world converge on Visions Restaurant at CPIT Aoraki on Saturday 13th February to co-create a five-course Olympic Feast showcase dinner for 110 lucky diners.

A squad of chefs from around the country including Auckland, Queenstown, Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch will present a special dinner featuring the best of New Zealand's fresh produce, served with stellar matching wines.

The squad, officially known as the NZ Chefs Fonterra Culinary Olympic Squad, are sharpening their skills in preparation for the Culinary Olympics in Germany in October where they will compete against 32 other teams. It is the first time New Zealand has competed in the event since the 1980s and NZ Chefs is the driver behind New Zealand's participation.

Neil MacInnes from CPIT Aoraki's School of Food and Hospitality is a life member of NZ Chefs and manages the competition squad. It's a very demanding compeition, he says. "Six of the chefs from the squad have just seven hours to cook a five-course meal, from scratch, for 110 people.

"It's amazing to see them work together in the kitchen. They are all experienced professionals working at various restaurants around New Zealand and we are very lucky to have assembled such a high calibre squad to volunteer for this challenge."

For the 13 February dinner in Christchurch, MacInnes is promising local produce including salmon and crayfish, New Zealand lamb of course, and Fonterra Kapiti cheeses used in innovative ways. Along with coordinating the squad, MacInnes other challenge will be to export the primary produce needed for the meal to Germany.

The Christchurch Olympics Feast dinner, one of a series of eight preparatory events around New Zealand, is also a fundraiser for the squad. NZ Chefs supports the industry in New Zealand through continued education and culinary competitions that showcase members' creativity and skills.

Tickets, $145 for five courses and wine matching (or $1300 table of 10), are limited and available from Vision Restaurant Manager Jason Newton on 021 287 8664
